Special Olympics Virginia, Football Program

July was a busy month, as brothers served as coaches and referees for The Special Olympics of Virginia Flag Football Kickoff, sponsored by The Washington Redskins, at the team’s practice facility in Ashburn, Virginia. The event was a heartwarming and joyful experience had by all by working with such an amazing group of athletes.

The brothers were pleasantly surprised by big smiles and gracious hugs as everyone was introduced. During the registration period, the brothers took full advantage of the opportunity to engage the athletes in some friendly competitions. There were 1 on 1 passing drills, linemen agility and blocking drills, and highly competitive games of catch that were happening across the entire field.

When it was time for the main event to begin, the Special Olympics team took a moment to thank all the volunteers, and then introduced former Redskin, Eddie Mason, and current Washington Redskin Tight End, Niles Paul. After a quick warm up and some stretching, the real fun and excitement began as the athletes and volunteers were separated into five groups and began the drills. At each station, the brothers actively supported and encouraged the athletes through the drills. It was not uncommon to see chest bumps in the end-zone when one of the athletes scored.

When the event was over, brothers realized how blessed they were in making a difference in these young men and women's lives. These athletes are nothing short of amazing. They are all truly gifted athletes. The brothers in attendance exclaimed how they could not wait until next year to do it again!

These athletes were Special for sure.
